Contemporary art in a corporate residence
Since the 25th of March, one unusual space called “Gallery N – Kanda Corporate Residence” opened near Kanda station. gallery N is a contemporary art gallery exhibiting works mainly by young contemporary artists and architects from Honyama, Nagoya.
When he arrived to Tokyo, the current owner of the gallery looked for places to open a gallery and ask a good friend for advice. With the help of his friend they searched for places, at that time, a new residence in Tokyo was in project in a new condominium near Kanda station, and so they decided to run a gallery in that place.
The place is a 2 minutes walk from the JR Kanda station towards Showa street. There is one newly built condominium where the lining buildings are like an urban forest.
When I visited there the other day, the contemporary artist Kento Nito with his project “The buoyancy of frozen clouds” (the exhibition is until April 8, 2017) had only just begun.
Mr. Nito is a familiar writer at gallery N and we’ve met with him. His work praise quiet madness that can not be imagined from a gentle personality, and it is amazing to see his work any number of times.
In this exhibition, we produced images using the whole floor of the apartment and works by insulation. It is said that the writer himself set it all up before the exhibition. In spite of a newly built apartment building, paint is poured on the cushion floor, which builds temporary walls and part of the work. Works focusing on family life and life, even though it is an individual’s story with social aspects.
Anpanman is drawn on the ceiling of the exhibition room, reminiscence of Mr. Nito’s living room. Anpanman’s face is drawn in circles, it is said that’s what child remembers first and it became a safe figure. The paint that drips from Anpanman to a child’s room can be visible. Since this gallery is also a company’s employee house, you can imagine you’ll be a bit confused since it will be quite a different kind of experience from normal galleries. Since I want to feel every details of the visit, we refrain from writing here, but everything is out of the standard. It is beyond the imagination.
Even if it is a corporate housing, don’t hesitate to go there. I think that it is worth visiting even just to experience the space only.
